For Your Art newsletter
The weekly ForYourArt (FYA) email started in 2006 after founder
Bettina Korek realized potential patrons in Los Angeles were looking for
a highly edited, trusted source of information about art and cultural
engagement in the city. The email has been sent every week since then as
a public service of her arts consultancy and will launch a New York and
everywhere edition the 2012.
FYA works closely with its partners and collaborators to create
energy and attention around arts engagement and patronage in Los Angeles
and beyond. With a strong spirit of corporate responsibility and giving
back, FYA is uniquely focused on helping connect commercial,
non-profit, and civic partners.

This Job Has No Title (Just Words And A Tune)
If you get that reference, extra points.
Polychrome is a small design group that does big work. In the last few
years we've made videos, renderings, environmental graphics, motion
graphics, websites, web apps, identities, album covers and full brand
campaigns. We're successful, growing, and always evolving. We like to
think we can do just about anything. Often that's what we're asked to do.
This means we're very busy with interesting work, but it also means
it's a bit hard to describe the 'job' we need someone to help us do. The
reality is that the job is doing whatever is needed in one of Los
Angeles' most active creative shops. You should be a creative person,
with hands on skills, but most of all you'll need to be uncommonly
detail oriented. You should be able to ramp up fast and have a
spider-sense about what to worry about and when. You should enjoy making
lists, checking things off, and obsess about making things perfect. We
need a great communicator, someone who's not shy, and who will enjoy
spending time with bold personalities. We'll need to put you in front of
clients and they're going to need to come back and tell us that you're
awesome.
We've deliberately kept our first team very small —
working with us means fitting in with the rhythm and the flow of the
group. Culture is important here. Work is life with us, and we're picky
about who we live with. We'd expect you to be the same.
Technically: know the internet, know Adobe apps, know Office apps, be
smart about general tech and hungry about knowing what's new and
interesting. A design background is good, but a good design sensibility,
street smarts, communication and project management skills are more
important. The people who ask us to create work expect both great
results and a great experience while it gets done. Process is more than
half the game. Nothing can fall through the cracks here. Maybe this
means you've trained as a creative person, but you gravitate towards
details and admin. Maybe you're an administrative person, with a
creative streak that you're not expressing at your current gig.
You've probably been beating the streets more than us, but there's
likely no job at any studio in LA that is going to resemble this.
There's no junk work, pizza coupons, or banner garbage that gets done at
Polychrome. We're looking for hands on help with our most important
projects. You won't be bored.
If this sounds interesting, get
in touch. We will make interviews quick — we'll both know if we're right
for each other within a few minutes. Come by, tell us your story, lunch
or coffee is on us.
Contact jobs@polychrome.com — please no
phone calls or resumes or gigantic PDF attachments of your portfolio.
Impress us early with your willingness to respect these requests. We
look forward to meeting. Cheers.

Primitive Spark is hiring a Jr. Interactive Designer
www.primitivespark.com
Do you read Tufte for fun? Light up when you see a really great data visualization? Tweet about a completely new interface design? If so, Primitive Spark is looking for you.
Primitive Spark is a boutique interactive agency in downtown Los Angeles. We’ve won our share of awards for websites and mobile apps, and we’re increasingly becoming known for designing distinctive software interfaces and data visualizations. It’s our privilege to work with great clients in many categories, but we can’t keep up with all the work coming in. We need your help.
We seek an Interface Designer with 1 – 3 years of experience and a great portfolio. To qualify you must have experience designing data visualizations, complex application interfaces or similar work. We’ll consider recent graduates with strong student portfolios, but you should also have some work experience in this area. You will report to our Creative Director in downtown Los Angeles.
Opportunities include freelance or part time to start with the potential for a full time position if we work well together. Pay is competitive based on experience. A great working environment and team to work with at our office downtown, with the possibility of working from home occasionally as well.
Requirements
- Conceptual thinker who can bring big ideas into our work;
- Great listener who can solve problems with design;
- Self-motivated to continuously learn and try new things;
- Collaborative, open-minded and comfortable participating in critiques;
- Trained in design principles: color, typography, layout, etc;
- Strong knowledge of interaction design principles;
- Detail-oriented, even under tight time constraints;
- Proficient in Photoshop and Illustrator;
- Working knowledge of HTML and Flash;
- A digital portfolio with at least five relevant work samples;
- Able to work in our downtown LA office;
- Bachelors degree or higher in design or visual arts-related field.
Preferences (not required, but helpful)
- Proficient in HTML and Flash;
- Experience with a prototyping tool such as Axure;
- 1+ years of work experience in a similar position;
- Ability to write and present effectively.
Humor, humility, respect and independence are qualities we value. Our culture is a nurturing place where each team member brings his or her unique vision, style, goals and interests into the mix. We support and encourage each other to be successful at being ourselves, so be prepared to bring your spark and contribute to the evolution of our team!
Submit your resume, contact info and portfolio to ignite@primitivespark.com.
No phone calls or placement agencies, please.

CSULB Art Gala Show
Jen So is a studio art student at CSULB and also a marketing minor. She is organizing this event that will take place on September 24th, 2011 (saturday) in the CBA building from 7pm - 10pm. It will be an art show that will feature 15 student artists to help bridge the gap between art and business majors and to network with those colleagues that they will essentially be working with when they graduate. This is especially the case if they get into a career choice such as advertisement or marketing. For the artists and business students, it will give them exposure and help them learn how to market themselves better in today's competitive world by utilizing this diverse network we have here at CSULB.

"Good design is good
citizenship," Michelle Obama said, quoting the graphic designer Milton
Glaser. She said that's because good design makes life better for
everyone.
Michelle Obama is teaming up with TV's Tim Gunn to honor some of the nation's top designers — including the creators of popular computer fonts and Swiffer floor-cleaning products — at the White House.
The first lady hosts a luncheon Tuesday to honor winners of the 2011 National Design Awards. The awards are presented by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City.
Earlier Tuesday, Gunn of "Project Runway" fame will host a teen design fair at the Smithsonian to introduce Washington high school students to careers in design.
This year's design award winners include Matthew Carter for his lifetime achievements in typeface designs that include the Verdana and Georgia fonts for Microsoft. The Boston-based design consultancy Continuum wins for product designs including Reebok's Pump shoes and Swiffers.
